Trainer vs Health Coach

Most people (even those who work out) have no clue what the difference is between a trainer and a health coach. Athletic Trainers have been around for years and non-athletic coaching such as Health Coaching, has been developing and exploding since the early 1990s. 


As fitness trainer I will work with you primarily to improve your physical fitness.


For example:


  • After assessing your state of fitness, I will set up and implement a safe, effective fitness program for you.


  • While working with you, I will monitor you closely to ensure that you are performing your exercises in a safe and effective fashion.


  • If you’re looking to make other healthy lifestyle changes, I will offer advice in accordance with the scope of my knowledge and practice.


  • I will help motivate, inspire and keep you moving towards your fitness goals. 


As a trainer, I don’t believe in the “no pain-no gain” mantra. But, my job is to make you uncomfortable. Expect me to push you safely, but push you I will. We will work together and laugh together. You will achieve more than you thought you were capable of, both physically and mentally.


Working as a health coach allows me to work with you in a holistic, mindful fashion. I've been hired me to help clients establish strategies to reduce stress, lose weight, plan and prep meals and help them plan their weekly schedules, as well as achieving their fitness goals.


I will focus on your fitness goals as well as your overall well- being. 


For example:


  • Using my knowledge of exercise science, programming, nutritional science, weight and behavioral management, I help you make desired changes.


  • Form a collaborative partnership utilizing my clients’ strengths, I co-create change and assist as necessary. Although I might be the health coaching expert, you are the expert of your own life. You are the focus, not me.


  •  With your input, I will help you develop successful strategies to navigate the real world while achieving and maintaining your desired changes.


  • If you are working with other health care providers, I can team up with your providers to provide you with the ultimate in wellness care.


  • To help keep you moving towards your goals, I provide an out-of-session, weekly phone call to touch base with you and provide additional support.


  • To increase motivation, you have the option to sign up for daily inspirational email messages from me.


There can be a degree of overlap in my duties as a trainer or health coach. I think that when I work with you as a health coach, there’s more mental work required of you.


We will dive deep into your motivations, needs, wants, and goals. We will work as a partnership but ultimately, you are responsible for your own success. I will hold you accountable for your actions to keep you moving forward.

What else do you want to know about me? Let’s see….I’ve been married for over 35 years and am the super proud parent of two beautiful adult children. My wife and I love to dance (west coast swing), read, cook, watch movies (horror movies being my absolute favorites, her not so much) and go on long “workout” hikes.

I’m vegan and believe in smart supplementation. For over 15 years I have helped my clients achieve nutritional excellence as a Shaklee Distributor

Writing music and performing as the lead singer in Zo and The Soul Breakers is one of the things I love doing, as well as having an occasional glass of red wine!
